H.K. Hallett Managing Partner Chief Operating Officer |
HK Hallett is Managing Partner, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Compliance Officer of Kingfisher Capital. Mr. Hallett is responsible for the management of Kingfisher’s Operations, Client Service, Compliance, and Administrative functions. In addition, Mr. Hallett serves as a member of the firm’s investment committee and oversees certain bespoke portfolios for wealthy individuals, families, and foundations.
In 2009, following a five-year relationship with WealthTrust, LLC, an investment management holding company with collectively $6 billion in affiliated assets, Mr. Hallett and Mr. Miles purchased all outstanding ownership interest from WealthTrust to form Kingfisher Capital, LLC. The transaction returned the company to its roots as an independent, management-owned investment house.
In 1989, Mr. Hallett co-founded Kingfisher Capital’s legacy firm, James M. Myers Research, Inc., an independent, registered investment advisory, where he served as President for fifteen years. During that time, Mr. Hallett also managed operations for its affiliated Broker-Dealer. He worked for Trust Company Bank of Georgia and Peoples Bank of North Carolina (now RBC Centura) before joining Carolina Securities Corporation, where he co-managed the Charlotte office.
H.K. received his M.B.A. in finance from Georgia State University. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Woodberry Forest School. He is active in the Charlotte community and currently serves on the Charlotte Metro YMCA Board as chairman of the investment committee and also on the board of the Charlotte Country Club.

Alexander B. (Alex) Miles
Managing Partner Chief Investment Officer |
Alex Miles is Managing Partner and Chief Investment Officer of Kingfisher Capital. Mr. Miles is responsible for directing investment strategy for the firm and oversees the firm’s investment committee. Mr. Miles also serves as Portfolio Manager for the firm’s various separate account strategies and investment funds, including the firm’s flagship Value Opportunity strategy.

While affiliated with WealthTrust, Mr. Miles served as Managing Director and Senior Portfolio Manager, managing investment strategy for the Charlotte office and managing certain alternative investment funds. He also managed portfolios at James M. Myers Research, Inc. and served as director of marketing for the Myers Limited Partnerships, consisting of three long-short investment partnerships.
Mr. Miles received his M.B.A from Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. During graduate school, he worked to develop an internal hedged equity product for high net worth and institutional clients for Lehman Brothers in New York. Prior to graduate school, he served as tournament operations and marketing manager for The PGA Tour, Inc. in Ponte Vedra, Florida. Mr. Miles earned a B.A. from Emory University and graduated from The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut. He is a coach and volunteer with Dilworth Little League.

William T. Grasty
Director of Business Development |
Mr. Grasty serves as Director of Business Development overseeing sales and marketing for Kingfisher Capital. He serves as a primary point of contact for prospective investors and works closely with clients to manage relationships on behalf of the firm.
In 2005, William joined WealthTrust Advisors, an investment advisory firm, serving as director of business development. Prior to joining WealthTrust Advisors, Mr. Grasty co-founded a manufacturing and wholesale company with emphasis on operational strategies in China. In addition, he worked for Hewlett-Packard in San Francisco in various marketing and business development roles. He also worked closely with HP's venture capital group, focusing on the emerging technologies arena. Prior to business school, he worked at First Union Capital Markets in the investment banking group.
Mr. Grasty received his M.B.A. from the Owen School of Management at Vanderbilt University. He earned a B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and graduated from Episcopal High School.

Brian Smyth
Senior Analyst |
Mr. Smyth serves as an analyst for Kingfisher Capital, supporting the firm's research, due diligence and portfolio construction.
In 2007, Brian joined WealthTrust Advisors, an investment advisory firm, as an analyst. In 2004, Brian founded Perennial Research LLC and launched Hubbert Peak Partners LP, an energy focused investment fund. Since 1995, he has worked as an analyst and partner at several hedge funds and investment banks in Charlotte, including Williamson Investors LP, Myers Limited Partnerships and Triarch Capital Partners LLC.
Brian received a B.A. in journalism and history from the University of Oklahoma in 1988. From 1988 to 1992, he served in the United States Navy as an officer aboard a guided-missile cruiser based in Charleston, South Carolina. He is a Desert Storm veteran. In 1995, he received his M.B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Virginia Starnes
Operations Manager |
Virginia serves as operations manager for Kingfisher Capital, overseeing trading activity, custodial relationships, and portfolio administration, having maintained a similar role during her tenure with WealthTrust Advisors.
Previously, she served as a trader and portfolio administrator for James M. Myers & Co. and also worked with Paul Reynolds' firm, Triangle Securities, as cashier and wire operator until her move to Charlotte in 2000. After retiring from a retail career in 1997, Ginny entered the investment industry with Wheat First Butcher Singer (now Wachovia Securities) in Raleigh, NC.
Virginia graduated from John T. Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC and received a B.S. in mathematics and psychology from Methodist College in Fayetteville, NC.

Carol Layton
Client Services Manager |
Carol serves as client services manager for Kingfisher Capital, providing client and account services, and general administrative support. In addition to her client service role, Carol serves as a trader and portfolio administrator, having maintained a similar role during her tenure with WealthTrust Advisors and James M. Myers & Co.
Prior to that, she spent many years in the healthcare industry in medical group practice administration, most recently serving as a clinic manager for First Charlotte Physicians.
A Charlotte native, Carol graduated from Myers Park High, attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and graduated from Queens College with a B.A. in business administration.
